“So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners,
but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
Christ Jesus Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building,
being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord,
in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”
Ephesians 2:19–22
“For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
According to the grace of God which was given to me,
as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it.
But let each one take heed how he builds on it.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:9–11
When someone wants to build a house on new land, they first consult specialists. They test the soil, check for underground waters. Without that, a solid foundation cannot be poured.
So it is with God. When we allow Him to enter—when we invite Him into our lives—He doesn’t break down the door, but quietly examines our hearts: are they suitable for becoming a dwelling of the Holy Spirit? If He sees unevenness, He straightens it with His Love—but only with our permission, with our invitation, when we truly desire it. If He detects hidden waters of sin, He dries them up with His grace. Only then does He lay the foundation: the only possible one—Jesus Christ. There is no other base for a renewed heart.
On this foundation, a house is built—our relationship with God: brick by brick. Each day, it grows taller and stronger. And we may not even notice that the Lord is laying more bricks than we are.
One day, we turn around—and before our eyes stands not just a wall, but a whole house inhabited by three virtues: faith, hope, and love. Its windows open to heaven, and its doors are always open to anyone whom the Lord sends. And we are never alone in that house, for in every room we hear the voice of the Father who gently embraces, of the Holy Spirit who inspires and whispers the Good News from every corner, and of the Son, who shows us what true Love is…
From time to time, this house needs maintenance. If we skip prayer too often—dust of indifference settles in the heart; if we neglect Scripture—the windows lose their light; if we cease to repent—mold creeps up the walls near the baseboards. Yet even then, He does not abandon us: He comes to cleanse and restore, like a good Master who cares for His temple—the dwelling of the Holy Spirit.
His house is not a palace of pride, nor a locked tower inside or out, but a place where a human being meets their Heavenly Father. Every morning, it resounds with the prayer: “I will love You, O Lord, my strength!” And every evening, another brick of faith, hope, and love is added—and the house rises higher and higher. Its dome is not made of gold, but of trust in the One who builds…
And if suddenly the storms of trials come—our house will not sway or shatter, for our foundation is stronger than all the cement in the world: it is Christ. And His hands uphold not only the building—but us.
Prayer: Lord, build Your House in my heart. May faith, hope, and love not be guests for just two hours on a Sunday, but permanent residents—and may they feel at home within me. And when the storms of trials come, do not let me fall, for You are my Rock. Amen.
